ASHBY SCHOOL HOSTS SPELLING BEE Ashby School held the School Spelling Bee on Thursday, January 21, 2016 at 2:15 p.m. in the school Auditorium. The event was open to the public. Ashby students in grades 5-8 were tested in November to determine qualifiers who are Halle Dahlen - Grade 8, Haddey Zastrow - Grade 8, Vincent Finkelson - Grade 8, Cailey Schlosser - Grade 7, Dakota Caraway - Grade 7, Jaden Norby - Grade 7, Evan Paulson - Grade 6, Jonah Knick - Grade 6, Zach Fagre - Grade 6, Emma Erickson - Grade 5, Livy Johnson - Grade 5, Brodie Ecker - Grade 5. The Ashby School Spelling Bee coordinator is Mrs. Barb Kraemer. The Ashby school champion will advance to Regional competition on February 9, 2016 at LCSC in Fergus Falls. From there they can advance to Multi-Regions also held in Fergus Falls at LCSC on February 22, 2016. The final step in the Spelling Bee competition is the Scripps National Spelling Bee competition in Washington, D.C. which isheld annually in the United States. The final bee, which is a consolidation of numerous local and regional spelling bees, is run on a not-for-profit basis by The E. W. Scripps Company and is held during the week following Memorial Day weekend. Most of its participants are from the U.S. Historically, the competition is open to the winners of sponsored regional spelling bees in the U.S. (including territories such as Guam, American Samoa, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, along with overseas military bases in Germany and South Korea) Contest participants cannot be older than fifteen as of August 31 of the year before the competition; nor can they be past the eighth grade as of February 1 of that year's competition. Previous winners are also ineligible to compete. 2015-2016 Spelling Bee Champion: Cailey Schlosser-grade 7. Runner-up Halle Dahlen-grade 8. HOW: For the 28th year, the National Geographic Society is holding the National Geographic Bee for students in the fourth through eighth grades in thousands of schools across the United States and in the five U.S. territories, as well as in Department of Defense Dependents Schools around the world. The champion of the Ashby School Nat Geo Bee will advance to the next level of competition, a written examination to determine state competitors. All school champions are eligible to win the national championship and its first prize, a $50,000 college scholarship, at the national championship May 22-25, 2016 in Washington, D.C.
