Students of the month, September '19...

10/25/2019

Over the course of a year, I have had the opportunity to get to know many of our students here at APS. It didn’t take me long to realize we have something special here. We live and work in a community that has deep roots and is proud of the culture that has been created at our school and community. One of the factors that make our school and community great goes back to our discussion earlier this week on “Self Awareness”. Through the years, students, staff, and community members have been aware of the strengths and weaknesses of our school and have reflected on them, enhancing and building on our strengths and sparking change in areas of weakness.

Being “Self Aware” allows us to constantly reflect on our choices. It gives us the chance to make changes in the way we live, opening the door to new experiences, opportunities and perspectives. Our exercise the other day was one that hopefully takes you to a place where you are always looking at new opportunities, reflecting on personal choices, and gives you a new perspective on other’s viewpoints.

Though they may not recognize it, the following students have clearly taken the idea of “Self-Awareness” and used it to find success in all facets of their lives. For their efforts, will the following two students come down to receive a certificate for Student of the month, along with a free lunch from one of our restaurants downtown?

In junior high, the following student was recognized by her teachers as being someone who is open to new ideas, comfortable asking questions when needed, hard-working, respectful, kind and compassionate to those around her and always puts in the greatest effort in her classes.  For her hard work, passion for learning and great work ethic would Haleigh Brendmoen please come down to collect your Student of the Month reward.

The following senior high student is looked up upon by his teachers and peers not only because of his height but also because of his strong moral compass. His teachers see him as someone who is personally driven to succeed at all times. His Self-Awareness is evident in that he is always striving to improve, whether it is in the classroom, field or court and in his personal life. His humbleness is one of his greatest qualities as he rarely puts himself above others. For his hard work, passion for learning, great work ethic, and humble heart would Jaden Norby please come down to collect your Student of the Month reward.

Our school is full of students who share these student’s passion for learning and shine bright on a daily basis. Know we are watching and are thankful for what you do for this school and our community. Karlie and Jaden, thank you for your hard work, your caring and thoughtful actions, and your continuous effort in striving for success. Congratulations you two!

    Students of the Month

Once a month we will take the time to recognize students who show the Ashby way on a continuous basis. The two students have been recognized by their teachers as students who have stood out amongst their peers to show the school and community the true meaning of dedication, passion, and hard work.

Ashby High School honors one student in junior high and one student in senior high each month for their hard work and dedication to the school and the community. Students are nominated monthly by teachers for their outstanding achievement in Citizenship, Academics, and Leadership. Students with the most nominations are awarded the title of Student of the Month. Below is a short description of qualities looked for in a potential Student of the Month.

Citizenship: Has a good sense of humor; is not critical of others; accepts criticism; is coach-able; is polite; obeys rules; follows directions; is a good sport; is dependable; helps others; and is honest. Also taken into consideration is someone who is a leader in several kinds of activities or who stands out for something positive he or she has done through words or examples. A good citizen/leader is someone who behaves not only in the classroom but all around the community.

Academics: Asks intelligent questions; uses vocabulary effectively; achieves at or above ability level work and makes up work without being reminded; and will go the extra mile.

Most Improved: Recognizes students who have worked on improving their grades or their behavior.

Sportsmanship: Refers to demonstrating fairness, self-control, courage, and persistence, treats others fairly, maintains self-control in dealing with others, respects both authority and opponents, and is a positive influence on everyone around them.

For their efforts, students have their photo taken, receive a certificate, along with a free lunch from one of our restaurants downtown.
