December Students of the Month...

1/29/2020

Habitudes are a focus on three characteristics: 1. Your behaviors 2. Your Habits 3. Your Attitude. If you want to be successful your behavior needs to be one that reflects consistency in your effort to be successful. Taking care of your body, your mind, and your soul. Your habits, are what you do on a daily basis. If you want to be successful in your schoolwork, you would create a habit of doing your homework at a specific time of the day. If you want to be a better athlete, you make a habit of getting up early to work out or staying after practice to get in some extra shots, run a couple of extra laps and so on. Your attitude drives the other two factors. If your attitude is that you can’t accomplish your goal and can’t do better on a math test, or you can’t make the starting team in your sport…. You won’t.

Wanting to be great, wanting to make a change, wanting to be better in some facet of your life is the first step into making a change, but your habitudes are what is going to help you get from lying in bed thinking about making a change and actually doing it. Successful people are intentional with their behaviors are strict with their regimens and habits and have a positive attitude even when obstacles slow their progress down.

The following students have found a way to be successful through their own habitudes and are being rewarded with being honored as December students of the month.

For their efforts, will the following two students come down to receive a certificate for December Student of the month, along with a free lunch from one of our restaurants downtown?

In junior high, the following student was recognized by his teachers as being an amazing young man. He always participates, offers insightful ideas and observations, and volunteers to help in any way he can. He is respectful, kind, and a true leader. He is also known to be curious, willing to do what is needed, always shows initiative, thinks beyond the lesson and applies it to other things, is kind and always polite. For his hard work, passion for learning, and great work ethic would Kenneth Spielman please come down to collect your Student of the Month reward.

The following senior high student continues to impress her teachers every day.  She is always positive, hard-working, and genuinely kind to everyone around her. She is helpful and thinks of others just as highly as herself. She is bright and very enthusiastic about learning. She's the tops! Another teacher mentioned that she has the most beautiful spirit about her and always accepts challenges with determination and positivity. She has high expectations for herself, big goals, patient, studious, willing to participate in all class activities to learn. For her hard work, passion for learning, great work ethic, and humble heart would Kennady Skougard please come down to collect your Student of the Month reward.

November Students of the Month...

11/29/2019

One of the joys of being an educator, especially one in a small district, is that you have an opportunity to watch students grow and mature into young adults. Over the years we teach and coach you, we watch you transition from students who seek constant supervision and oversight in everything from your studies to the playground to young adults who have matured, and grown and can apply what you have learned, developed a point of view based on information you have collected and have created a plan for your future based on experiences and interests.

As we watch you succeed, fail, and grow we hope that you take every opportunity to learn from mistakes, build on your success and be the person you envision yourself being in the future.  Since we are celebrating the turning of a new year and a new decade I thought the following advice from Benjamin Franklin would be fitting when he said, be at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let every new year find you a better man (person).  Take this opportunity to reflect on where you were a year ago, where you are now, and where you want to be a couple of years down the road. As your teachers, we are watching and willing to be there to help guide you on your path to who you want to be.

The following students choose to live out their lives by applying their efforts into not only being great students but more importantly great people. For celebrating the small and large success and for being true examples of what it means to be an Arrow, we would like to award the following to students for being November Students of the Month.

In junior high, the following student was recognized by his teachers as being someone who ALWAYS has a smile on his face and is friendly in the hallway. He never walks by without saying good morning or hello. He perseveres and always puts his best effort forward. He is always courteous, positive, helpful, kind, and strives to do his best. For his hard work, passion for learning and great work ethic would Hunter Hanstad please come down to collect your Student of the Month reward.

The following senior high student is looked up upon by his teachers as someone who attends to his classwork,  is focused, on task, and attentive. He has been very diligent in his note-taking in class, helps his classmates stay on task and also helps others understand concepts. He is humble and not afraid to ask questions. His teachers are greatly impressed with the strides he has made this year and find his determination in both academics and sports admirable. He is working hard and it shows. For his hard work, passion for learning, great work ethic, and humble heart would Torin Olson please come down to collect your Student of the Month reward.

October, Students of the Month

10/31/2019

Success comes in many forms and is dependent on a person’s situation. As educators, we encounter success every day working with students in our classrooms, on the field, court, or stage. We are fortunate that we have this opportunity. As the years go by we see students mature and grow into adults who leave and go on to do great things from this school. If you spend any time on social media you would know that not everyone celebrates each other’s successes. Unfortunately, people often use these platforms to point out the differences in each other, humiliate someone for their views and the way they choose to express themselves and at times even downplay someone celebrating personal successes.

Success for all of us looks different. A person who has been ill and has finally regained the strength to get up and start work again may see that as a success. A person who has been out of work for months who just found a part-time minimum paying job will find that as a success.  A preschool student who just learned to tie their shoes feels like they can now accomplish anything.

We can choose to find success in all facets of our lives if we choose to do so. Our perspective on success will drive this. In a 2013 commencement speech, the Oprah Winfrey said to graduating students, “No matter what challenges or setbacks or disappointments you may encounter along the way, you will find true success and happiness if you have only one goal, there really is only one, and that is this: to fulfill the highest most truthful expression of yourself as a human being.”

The following students choose to live out their lives by expressing themselves by applying their efforts into not only being great students but more importantly as great people. For celebrating the small and large success and for being true examples of what it means to be an Arrow, we would like to award the following to students for being October Students of the Month.

In junior high, the following student was recognized by her teachers as being someone who is positive, open to new learning and puts her best effort into her work. She has a kind heart and is always willing to help out a classmate or teacher. She works hard and doesn't let those around her distract her. For her hard work, passion for learning and great work ethic would Veronica Johnson please come down to collect your Student of the Month reward.

The following senior high student is looked up upon by his teachers as someone who is dependable, reliable, and willing to do his best. He is always looking for ways to improve in his academics and teachers tend to have a lot of respect and admiration for him. For his hard work, passion for learning, great work ethic, and humble heart would Sam Heeter please come down to collect your Student of the Month reward.

Students of the month, September '19...

10/25/2019

Over the course of a year, I have had the opportunity to get to know many of our students here at APS. It didn’t take me long to realize we have something special here. We live and work in a community that has deep roots and is proud of the culture that has been created at our school and community. One of the factors that make our school and community great goes back to our discussion earlier this week on “Self Awareness”. Through the years, students, staff, and community members have been aware of the strengths and weaknesses of our school and have reflected on them, enhancing and building on our strengths and sparking change in areas of weakness.

Being “Self Aware” allows us to constantly reflect on our choices. It gives us the chance to make changes in the way we live, opening the door to new experiences, opportunities and perspectives. Our exercise the other day was one that hopefully takes you to a place where you are always looking at new opportunities, reflecting on personal choices, and gives you a new perspective on other’s viewpoints.

Though they may not recognize it, the following students have clearly taken the idea of “Self-Awareness” and used it to find success in all facets of their lives. For their efforts, will the following two students come down to receive a certificate for Student of the month, along with a free lunch from one of our restaurants downtown?

In junior high, the following student was recognized by her teachers as being someone who is open to new ideas, comfortable asking questions when needed, hard-working, respectful, kind and compassionate to those around her and always puts in the greatest effort in her classes.  For her hard work, passion for learning and great work ethic would Haleigh Brendmoen please come down to collect your Student of the Month reward.

The following senior high student is looked up upon by his teachers and peers not only because of his height but also because of his strong moral compass. His teachers see him as someone who is personally driven to succeed at all times. His Self-Awareness is evident in that he is always striving to improve, whether it is in the classroom, field or court and in his personal life. His humbleness is one of his greatest qualities as he rarely puts himself above others. For his hard work, passion for learning, great work ethic, and humble heart would Jaden Norby please come down to collect your Student of the Month reward.

Our school is full of students who share these student’s passion for learning and shine bright on a daily basis. Research has shown that much of who we are is shaped by our experiences throughout our lives.  As we navigate childhood, what we experience slowly shapes our view on the world around us. We develop who we are, what we like and dream about who we want to become all based on the positive and negative experiences we have. For some, a negative experience will deter us from working through a challenging situation while others, with the proper support will fight through the uncomfortable feelings and find a way to succeed.

We call this stick-with-it-ness: Grit.

In a world that provides instant gratification in almost any situation, people who have “grit” will be able to overcome the times where answers are not readily available, or a challenge at home or at work seems overwhelming. Grit is what helps us take any situation and turn it into a positive outcome.

The following two students are being recognized by their teachers as being students who have characteristics that show us that no matter what life has faced them or will face them, they have the character, grit, determination and work ethic to come out happy, healthy and successful in whatever they choose to do.

For their efforts, the following two students will receive a certificate for March Student of the month, along with a free lunch from one of our restaurants downtown.

In junior high, the following student was recognized by her teachers as being conscientious, accepting of others, considerate, inclusive of everyone and always does her best.  For her hard work, passion for learning and great work ethic would Karlie Maack congratulations on your Student of the Month reward.

The following senior high student continues to show underclassman how hard work, a positive attitude and a love of learning pays off. This student has a desire to learn and is attentive, gleaning new knowledge wherever she can. She is intelligent and understands complex issues and can carry on a conversation about them. She notices when her classmates need help and helps where she can. She is true to her word and herself. For her hard work, passion for learning, great work ethic, and humble heart would Joan Maunumaki congratulations on your Student of the Month reward.

February Students of the Month...

2/28/2019

Years from now, when high school is just a distant memory, you will find yourself in a situation where you will run into an old friend. Maybe it's just a coincidence or a planned reunion but regardless of the reason, you will find yourself face to face with an older version of a good friend. At that moment, memories and thoughts of the past will come back to both of you. Some may be welcomed while others are painful. Through this reunion What both of you will remember are the characteristics that made you who you were at that time. Either one of you may have been a great athlete, an honor roll student, a dropout, an FFA star, a musician, or just a little bit of everything. None of that will matter. What does matter and what will be remembered are the characteristics that made you who you were.

The point of this story is this.... The characteristics we have now often shape who we will be in the future. Those of us who have determination, grit, patience, a strong work ethic, who are kind, courteous, humble and eager to learn often find themselves on a path of happiness and success. The role we play in high school doesn’t define who we are, but the way we act, the way we handle difficult situations and the way we treat others, give us a great indicator of who we will become later in life. And though we often equate success to money, the characteristics that make us good people are the ones that lead to the greatest sense of happiness and inner wealth and often financial wealth.

The following two students are being recognized by their teachers as being students who have character traits that we know will lead them to a path of success later in life.  They have shown these characteristics every day in our school and community and we know that years down the road when they run into an old friend they will be remembered for the following things.

For their efforts, will the following two students come down to receive a certificate for February Student of the month, along with a free lunch from one of our restaurants downtown.

In junior high, the following student was recognized by her teachers as being a hard worker, an overachiever, pays attention to detail and participates intelligently in class discussions. This student is known as someone who is passionately interested in many different things, a great communicator and a very sweet, kind, and genuine person.  For her hard work, passion for learning and great work ethic congratulations,  Kennedy Skougard on your Student of the Month reward.

The following senior high student continues to show underclassman how hard work, a positive attitude and a love of learning pays off. Her teachers have mentioned that there aren’t enough ways to describe how remarkable she is. From her class work to extracurricular activities, this students positively shines.  She is also known for her integrity and commitment which was mentioned as being second to none. For her hard work, passion for learning, great work ethic, and humble heart, congratulations, Cailey Schlosser on your Student of the Month reward.

January '19 Students of the Month...

1/31/2019

It is known that resilience, grit, determination, self-awareness, and the ability to learn from our mistakes are characteristics successful people have either gained on their own or have been taught throughout their life. At times this journey can be lonely, but hopefully it is one you never have to walk alone for long. All of our paths to success look differently. It is our job as educators to guide you from wherever you are and take you to where you want to be to make sure you reach the very best version of yourself.

Regardless of their path, the following two students are being recognized by their teachers as students who have reached a path of success and work every day to show the school and community the true meaning of dedication, passion, and hard work.

For their efforts, will the following two students will receive a certificate for January Student of the month, along with a free lunch from one of our restaurants downtown.

Academics: Asks intelligent questions; uses vocabulary effectively; achieves at or above ability level work and makes up work without being reminded; and will go the extra mile.

Most Improved: Recognizes students who have worked on improving their grades or their behavior.

Sportsmanship: Refers to demonstrating fairness, self-control, courage, and persistence, treats others fairly, maintains self-control in dealing with others, respects both authority and opponents, and is a positive influence on everyone around them.

For their efforts, students have their photo taken, receive a certificate, along with a free lunch from one of our restaurants downtown.
